5 Ways To Celebrate Summer Solstice in a Modern World

5 Ways To Celebrate Summer Solstice in a Modern World

As the earth has continued to tilt on it’s axis towards the sun, summer solstice is fast approaching, so it’s time to prepare yourself to bask in the power of the sun with the help of these 5 Ways to Celebrate the Summer Solstice in the Modern World.

All these ideas have one thing in common, they all involve nature, beauty, peace and thankfulness.

The longest day and shortest night of the entire year will transpire on June 21st, 2018 up in the Northern Hemisphere. After the 21st, the days will only get shorter as we descend back into the winter months; it’s important to appreciate summer while we have the chance!

Summer solstice, or Midsummer, celebrations have occurred for thousands of years around the world, in almost every culture and religion. In our modern age, it represents a fantastic opportunity to celebrate family, community, and a connection to nature when we’re otherwise disconnected and purposefully from the natural phenomenons of earth.

However, since we don’t always have the ability to fit visits to Stonehenge and nighttime dances within our busy family and work schedules, here are five great, easy ways to celebrate the summer solstice in your own backyard and neighbourhood!

1. Gather Flowers & Herbs (and give thanks).

picking herbs

This is so perfect for solstice for so many reasons. It allows you to go outside and be commune with the plant world. Giving thanks to the plants and the earth for providing us beauty, food, medicine and oxygen. When gathering natures bounty, you’ll have the chance to bask in the rays of the sun at it’s most powerful. Take a moment when you’re outside to just BE. Lay in the grass, sit on a bench, stand still in a meadow, stop while walking through the park, close your eyes and lift your face toward the powerful sun and give thanks for the life, warmth and courage it gives.

Taking a handful of those beautiful flowers and herbs inside to your abode, or gifting them to others is a constant reminder of beauty & love. A few things we all need to live a full, healthy life.

Herbs to gather for the Solstice will partly depend on where you are geographically. Calendula, Rosemary, Lavender, Sage, Lemon Balm, Mint, Oak Leaves,

Herbs: Add herbs to your salad, make herbal tea/iced tea, make a herbal healing infusion.

Flowers: Add Flowers to your salad, place them in a vase or press them in a book.

2. Make an Essential Oil Diffuser Blend

The Solstice is a time of energy, power and manifestation. Since Essential Oils come from the aromatic plants of the world they are the perfect fit for bringing the natural world into our daily lives. The aroma of Pure Essential Oils helps us feel grounded, centred and connected to the earth and in touch with our inner power.

Use any essential oil that makes you feel powerful and full of energy. Here’s a diffuser blend that would be awesome for this, could be made into a body spray as well.

3. Light a Candle and Manifest

It’s a shift of season in the natural world, and what occurs in the natural is often reflected in the spiritual. While we’re being thankful for the light of the sun, the beauty of the natural world and the love in our lives, Solstice moves us into growth and the seeds of what we’ve previously planted begin to shoot up!

Traditionally, the Solstice included a bonfire! Charms and herbs would be thrown in to signify the end of Midsummer’s Night. Lighting a candle can be a significant ritual that’s a bit more practical than the intensely hot and probably not strata approved bonfire option.

We use flame to stoke up the dreams within us. As we focus on the flame, we take note of what big dreams are waiting to appear on the horizon. Keep your heart and mind locked in that place, don’t slip into regrets or self reflection. Completely ignore any negative thought and soak in the beautiful light from the candle and within.

4. Write It All Down

As dreams, plans and inspiration come to you, write them down! All of them! Let your thoughts flow and don’t overthink, just enjoy where you’re heading.

Since Solstice is a time of great power, we use this highly charged time of year to Manifest BIG THINGS in our lives!

It can be easy to forget an inspiring thought you had, but by writing it down you give it weight and you can check back to remind yourself of the awesome things to come. Use a few coloured pens if you like to make it fun and memorable. This will help you hold onto the connection you created with the candle ritual, and you’ll be able to carry that Summer Solstice feeling with you all through the season.

5. Go for a swim  (*Nakedness Optional*)

Summer Solstice is a time of balance between Fire and Water. While the Sun is at it’s peak performance, water is the refreshing and cleansing balance. Stepping into your most powerful state along with the heat of the glorious Sun can leave you feeling a touch drained. A dip in a lake, river, creek or ocean refreshes and invigorates the body and mind.

Perhaps float on your back, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Feel the peace of being exactly where and who you should be.

Let the Water renew your spirit so you can feel completely calm and strong while walking into what you manifest!
