As the earth has continued to tilt on it’s axis towards the sun, summer solstice is fast approaching, so it’s time to prepare yourself to bask in the power of the sun with the help of these 5 Ways to Celebrate the Summer Solstice in the Modern World.
All these ideas have one thing in common, they all involve nature, beauty, peace and thankfulness.
The longest day and shortest night of the entire year will transpire on June 21st, 2018 up in the Northern Hemisphere. After the 21st, the days will only get shorter as we descend back into the winter months; it’s important to appreciate summer while we have the chance!
Summer solstice, or Midsummer, celebrations have occurred for thousands of years around the world, in almost every culture and religion. In our modern age, it represents a fantastic opportunity to celebrate family, community, and a connection to nature when we’re otherwise disconnected and purposefully from the natural phenomenons of earth.
However, since we don’t always have the ability to fit visits to Stonehenge and nighttime dances within our busy family and work schedules, here are five great, easy ways to celebrate the summer solstice in your own backyard and neighbourhood!
1. Gather Flowers & Herbs (and give thanks).
This is so perfect for solstice for so many reasons. It allows you to go outside and be commune with the plant world. Giving thanks to the plants and the earth for providing us beauty, food, medicine and oxygen. When gathering natures bounty, you’ll have the chance to bask in the rays of the sun at it’s most powerful. Take a moment when you’re outside to just BE. Lay in the grass, sit on a bench, stand still in a meadow, stop while walking through the park, close your eyes and lift your face toward the powerful sun and give thanks for the life, warmth and courage it gives.
Taking a handful of those beautiful flowers and herbs inside to your abode, or gifting them to others is a constant reminder of beauty & love. A few things we all need to live a full, healthy life.
Herbs to gather for the Solstice will partly depend on where you are geographically. Calendula, Rosemary, Lavender, Sage, Lemon Balm, Mint, Oak Leaves,
Herbs: Add herbs to your salad, make herbal tea/iced tea, make a herbal healing infusion.
Flowers: Add Flowers to your salad, place them in a vase or press them in a book.

A dip in a lake, river, creek or ocean refreshes and invigorates the body and mind.
